Lucy Llera has been a member of the Puerto Rican Heritage Society, a cultural non-profit organization, since 1986.  Her contributions through the years have been one of the major factors that have helped our organization impact, and contribute to the San Antonio Arts & Cultural community.

Lucy was born and raised in Cayey, Puerto Rico where she attended public school. After she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education and Art from the University of Puerto Rico, she taught art in the public schools in Puerto Rico for 14 years.

In 1982 she moved to San Antonio, TX and while continuing her studies in arts, she joined the Southside Independent School District’s Staff as a bilingual teacher.

Nuestras-TradicionesWhile working in Pierce Elementary, she developed a program Incorporating music , art, and theater to develop Academic Languages, a method that was later adopted by the Texas Education System.  She taught for 17 years in the San Antonio School system for which she received many awards.  She retired in 1999 and dedicate herself to her true love – painting.

Ms. Llera studied watercolors under the direction of a famous San Antonio artist, Warren Hunter; as well as under two local artists: Danile Green and Dalhart Wingburg.

She is the PRHS sole artist of the Puerto Rican Festival’s Official Posters since 1998.  She also creates beautiful paintings depicting Puerto Rican folklore, traditions, crafts and culture.

Her contributions to so many San Antonio organizations, such as museums, universities, school systems, and other non-profit organizations through her donations, volunteer work, workshops and exhibits, have been recognized by the United Way Volunteer of the year Award.  Lucy was honored with the Individual Arts & Culture Award on June 25, 2008.

Lucy is a member of the Water Color Society, Calligraphy Guild, The Coppini Academy of Fine Art and The Alamo Decorative Artists.
